Hoje é sexta-feira 13. Tudo bem que é carnaval (só no Brasil, aqui nem uma brisa de confetes e serpentinas).
Hoje amanheceu nevando.
Hoje cedo ocupamos uma estação ao sul da Ilha Elefante, que é famosa pelo "tempo ruim".

Tudo isso pra dizer que hoje tivemos um problema no guincho oceanográfico, que sobe e desce o carrossel com as garrafas de Niskin e o CTD-O2-fluorímetro, e que também hoje o mar ficou um pouco mais agitado.

Mesmo assim o problema do guincho foi resolvido, uhu! E apesar do mar conseguimos trabalhar. E o por do sol foi espetacular, com a Ilha Clarence ao fundo!

Today is Friday 13th. Ok, it is Carnival - but only in Brazil, here not even a single breeze of it.
Today we had snow.
Today, early morning, we've occupied a station south of Elephant Island, famous for its almost permanent bad weather.
And then, there was a small problem with the CTD winch, and sea got a bit rough (but beautiful, one must admit).

Take your own conclusions :) !

By the way, winch problem was solved, yes!!! And despite the waves we were still able to work. And we had a beautiful sunset, with a view to Clarence Island.

Rotina de lançamento de CTD e laboratório, como sempre. alguém provavelmente já deve ter pensado assim ' - Mas é só isso?'. Acontece que a cada vez que o CTD desce é a maior expectativa sobre que estrutura vertical de temperatura (T), salinidade (S), oxigênio dissolvido (OD) e fluorescência vamos encontrar ali naquela estação. Hoje começamos um transecto que vai da Ilha Joinville (escondida no nevoeiro...) em direção à Ilha Elefante. A Ilha Joinville fica na borda do Mar de Weddell, que nos últimos anos tem estado coberto de gelo, mesmo agora no final do verão. E essa região onde estivemos hoje de manhã é chamada de "Cemitério de Icebergs". Só pra dar uma ideia antes das fotos, aquele primeiro iceberg que eu falei na Baía do Almirantado, era, na verdade, um cubo de gelo...

 Routine as usual. Someone has already probably thought 'Is that all???', but I can assure you that every time there is a  CTD cast, we're all excited looking at the screen and trying to guess what's coming in the T, S, O2 and fluorescence vertical profiles in that station. today we've started a transect going from Joinville Island towards Elephant Island (you may check the map in the last post). Joinville Island is located at the border of the Weddell Sea, in a place called "The Iceberg Graveyard" by seamen. And, just to give you an idea, that first iceberg I saw in Admiralty Bay a few days ago was more like an ice cube, when compared to these giants...

Estamos avançando bem na ocupação das estações oceanográficas. Agora no Estreito de Bransfield, temos visto nos perfis verticais uma camada de mistura bem marcada, com o máximo de fluorescência por volta de 30 m. Os próprios valores de fluorescência têm sido mais elevados que no
Estreito de Gerlache. Da parte de massas d'água, vemos intrusões de águas mais quentes (ou menos frias, se preferirem) por volta de 200-300m, e com menos O2 dissolvido. Nas últimas estações do turno do dia, encontramos águas no fundo mais frias, mais salinas e com mais O2 dissolvido,
vindas provavelmente da região de plataforma do Mar de Weddell. Hoje também vimos muitas baleias Fin perto da Ilha Bridgeman, um rochedo bem alto que surge do nada no meio do mar (ainda mais nesses dias cinzentos e com névoa). Peço desculpas a todos, mas as minhas habilidades pra fotografar as baleias ainda não são lá essas coisas...

On the oceanography side, work is going on really well. Now, back in Bransfield, we've seen that the surface mixed layer is well defined, and fluorescence peaks (~30m) are "stronger", compared to Gerlache. In some of the stations we see at intermediate depth warmer waters, with less dissolved O2, and by the end of the day shift, we've seen cooler, more saline and more oxigenated waters, probably coming from the Weddell Sea shelf. We saw today lots of Fin whales close to Bridgeman Island, a curiously shaped (high) rock that emerges out of nothing from the sea. Well, at least this is the impression I had because of the greyish and foggy days at sea. Sorry but my skills as a whale photographer are not really good...

As estações oceanográficas continuam, e até o final do dia de hoje devemos nos aproximar de 50% de ocupação dos pontos previstos para esta missão. A rotina não mudou nada em relação a ontem, mas a paisagem sumiu no nevoeiro, e de vez em quando cai um ou outro floquinho de neve. A que caiu ontem nem "sujou" o navio. Do lado de fora, a única cor que se vê é a do arco lateral e o casco do navio, que sao bem vermelhos, todo o resto é puro preto e branco, até as pombinhas do Cabo (Daption capense) que acompanham a gente de vez em quando. A estação do começo da noite hoje trouxe uma surpresa: salpas, muitas salpas (de barriga cheia, por sinal) na superfície, e que vieram presas no carrossel com o CTD e as garrafas. O perfil de fluorescência também mostrou um pico muito mais forte que o habitual. Vamos ver o que as análises nos dirão!

Work is going on, we left the gerlache Strait and we've occupied around 50% of the oceanographic stations by now. Same routine as yesterday, and a thick fog all over. The only colours one can see are the red A-Frame and ship herself. Even the birds that follow the ship, the Cape petrels (Daption capense), are black and white! A few snow flakes are playing in the wind outside. Early evening we were surprised by lots of salps that came attached to the rosette (we could actually see them, like chains, on the surface), and a very strong fluorescence peak - we'll see the analysis results!

O grupo agora entrou no ritmo, todo mundo entrosado e bem concentrado no trabalho. Muita água pra filtrar, para termos amostras de material particulado (tudo o que ficou retido nos filtros de 0.7µm de diâmetro) e podermos determinar as concentrações de carbono orgânico e nitrogênio nesta fração, dentro da camada de mistura de superfície. Estamos coletando geralmente amostras a 5m, 25m (onde temos encontrado o máximo de fluorescência, determinado pelo sensor que vai acoplado ao CTD-O2), e por vezes, agora nas estações no estreito de Gerlache, também logo abaixo da termoclina, já os valores de fluorescência têm sido altos. O pessoal dos projetos BALEIAS e INTERBIOTA saiu hoje no bote para colher amostras (biópsia) de baleias jubarte. Conseguiram 5 indivíduos diferentes. No mais, o tempo super nublado nos brindou com alguns floquinhos de neve aqui e ali no final da tarde.

Our group is now used to the shifts, everybody is really focused on work. Lots of water samples to filter (0.7µm glass fibre filters) in order to perform the POC/PN analysis when we are back in LAGOM/UERJ. We're taking water samples from the surface mixed layer (some 30m thick at Gerlache), and also from the layer just below the thermocline. BALEIAS and INTERBIOTA projects crew left today in the Zodiac to collect samples from Humpback whales - got 5! Weather is quite cloudy these days, and we saw the first snow flakes in the end of the afternoon.

Hoje (incluindo a madrugada de ontem pra hoje), continuamos a ocupar as estações oceanográficas, além de seguirmos um transecto ao longo do estreito de Gerlache, com o objetivo de observar as baleias na região (Projetos INTERBIOTA e BALEIAS). Sim, há muitas baleias jubarte nadando por aqui!

O estreito de Gerlache é um capítulo à parte, de tão lindo! Montanhas e geleiras enormes dos dois lados, gelo na água fazendo o mar parecer prateado. E hoje, no final do dia, atingimos o ponto mais ao sul da derrota deste cruzeiro oceanográfico, 65°S.

Today (including the early morning), we've carried on at the stations our CTD-O2 Fluorescence vertical profiling, water sampling for carbon (alkalinity, pH, DOC, POC), nutrients, pigments, phytoplankton and bacteria biomass. additionally, the BALEIAS project group has followed a transect along the Gerlache Strait. There are quite a lot of humpback whales around.

Gerlache Strait is awesome! High mountains, glaciers on both sides, ice floating on the water, it was looking silvery everywhere. and today we've also reached our southernmost point for the cruise: 65°S.

NAUTILUS, o início!

Hoje à tarde começamos a primeira estação oceanográfica do projeto NAUTILUS, que tem vários pontos em comum com o projeto INTERBIOTA. Muita expectativa, mas deu tudo certo! No meu turno, ainda havia luz quando ocupamos a segunda estação, em frente à Ilha Deception - um antigo vulcão, do qual hoje sobram as paredes da cratera, formando uma baía no interior da ilha. Impressionante!
Das vigias do Tio Max, muitas baleias jubarte, leões marinhos e pinguins nadando por aqui - pena que as minhas habilidades como fotógrafa ainda ajudem muito a fotografar estes animais. E mais um iceberg! Amanha temos mais...

This afternoon we have occupied the first oceanographic station common to NAUTILUS and INTERBIOTA projects, and everything went fine. During my work shift, there was still enough light to see (but not to photograph...) Deception Island. Our second station is located in front of the island, that actually is an old volcano. The craters form a closed bay, giving it a truly funny horseshoe shape.

When one stares at the sea around here, there are always humpback whales, penguins, albatrosses, and so on. Unfortunately my photograph skills are not good enough to capture them, so I just enjoy the view. We passed by another iceberg today! More tomorrow...

Terra à vista! Avistamos a Ilha do Rei George (que faz parte do arquipélago das Ilhas Shetland do Sul) pela manhã, onde fica a EACF.
Hoje comemoramos o aniversário do Chefe de Operações do Tio Max, parabéns Gizo!
À tarde, vários colegas desembarcaram, e começamos a faina de arrumar o laboratório misto e o convés do CTD para os trabalhos dos projetos NAUTILUS e INTERBIOTA. Ficou tudo pronto para amanhã! E o navio também ficou bem vazio.

Ah, e hoje vi o primeiro iceberg da minha vida. Nem sei se é grande, pequeno, feio ou bonito. Acho que nao me esqueco mais.

Land! We saw the King George Island (one of the South Shetland Islands), where the Brazilian Antarctic Station (EACF) is located.
Today we also celebrated Gizo's birthday, Uncle Max's Operations Chief. Happy birthday!
In the afternoon, many colleagues left the ship to the station on land, and we've finished preparing the lab and the CTD deck. Everything is ready for tomorrow!

Last, but not the least, I've seen the first iceberg in my life. Not sure whether it is a small or big, pretty or ugly one. But I'll never forget it.

Agora faltam o Oceano Índico e o Ártico pra completar o álbum.
Hoje à tarde cruzamos o paralelo 60°S, que "marca" o limite norte do Oceano Austral. Estamos oficialmente na Antártica!
No laboratório, mexemos ainda em algumas coisas, mas devemos ainda esperar amanhã para que todos desembarquem na EACF. Sem muitas novidades a bordo.
PS: Drake tranquilo. É MUITA ÁGUA! E é lindo!

Now there are missing the Indian and the Arctic Oceans to tick in my map. This afternoon we crossed the 60°S parallel, which is the northern border of the Southern Ocean. We are officially in Antarctica!
In the lab we have arranged a couple of small things, but we really need to wait for tomorrow, when the colleagues that will stay on land will leave the ship.
PS: Calm Drake Passage. So much water, amazing and beautiful!

Saímos dos canais chilenos e amanheceu um dia lindo, o céu parecia competir com o mar pra ver quem era o mais azul. O mar está calmo, bom pra navegar (o navio também é muito bom), e só de vez em quando vem uma ou outra onda meio de través, mas faz parte. Navegar é preciso, ainda mais pra chegar na Península Antártica. Hoje consolidamos o plano amostral, tiramos grande parte do material de laboratório e trabalho que estava no porão, e amanhã começará a faina de montar tudo. A previsão de chegada na Estação Antártica Comandante Ferraz (EACF) é sexta-feira, onde muitos colegas a bordo vão desembarcar. Sábado começa a Oceanografia, uhu!
Bucaneira é um apelido antigo... Drake, dependendo do ponto de vista histórico (principalmente se for do ponto de vista espanhol), também recebeu a mesma alcunha...

Left the Chilean waters, and we day today is simply gorgeous. Sky and sea competing to get the "bluest" shade of blue ever. Sea is calm (and ship is great), just every now and then a wave on the side to shake a little bit. Navegar é preciso (check Fernando Pessoa and you'll understand). Today we finished the station plan, took almost all of our material from the deposit, and tomorrow we'll start preparing the lab. On Friday we should reach Estacao Antártica Comandante Ferraz, where quite a few colleagues will leave the ship. Saturday we'll eventually start doing Oceanography!!! Yes!!
Buccaneer is an old nickname... Drake and his mates, depending on the historical point of view, too...

Hoje é o sexto aniversário da incorporacao do Tio Max à Marinha do Brasil! Tivemos cerimônia e comemoracoes a bordo, parabéns!!
A navegação através dos canais chilenos foi tranquila, e o visual é deslumbrante. O céu nublado poderia ter sido mais camarada, mas NADA apaga a cor azul fantástica das geleiras. O por do sol nos brindou com um pouquinho mais de cores no céu, e à noite, quando navegávamos em frente à cidade de Ushuaia, na Argentina, fomos brindados com uma lua cheia que prateou todo o navio. Amanhã começaremos a travessia da Passagem de Drake. Fotos a seguir, quando possível...

Six years ago, Uncle Max joined the Brazilian Navy. We had a celebration on board, happy birthday!
The Magellan Strait has gorgeous landscapes! The cloudy skies could not dim the unbelievable blue colour from the glaciers. We had a bit of sun late in the afternoon, and when we were passing in front of Ushuaia, Argentina, a bright silver full moon came out. Beautiful! Tomorrow we'll start sailing through the Drake Passage. Pictures later, please be patient :)

Expectativa para largar. Às 13:00h, todos a bordo, e assim deixamos Punta Arenas no final da tarde. Previsão de mar calmo na derrota, inclusive no Drake. Aproveitamos para dividir as equipes dos projetos NAUTILUS e INTERBIOTA - quem trabalha no turno da manhã, quem fica à noite, controle de convés, operação de CTD, filtração, coleta de água, e por aí vai. Quando terminar a travessia, vamos arrumar o laboratório.
Punta Arenas é muito simpática! Já passei a mão no pé do índio :) , e joguei umas margaridinhas no mar, just in case.
Fico devendo fotos. Assim que puder, eu farei uma atualizacao nos posts pra incluir as fotos. Até!

Great expectations, all on board today at 13:00, in order to leave Punta Arenas by the end of the afternoon. Weather forecast is good, and that includes also the Drake Passage (ouff!). We (NAUTILUS and INTERBIOTA projects) have divided the team into day and night shifts, who's going to operate the CTD, control the activities on deck, filter, collects the water samples and so on.
Punta Arenas is a nice place. I've scrubbed the indian statue's foot, just in case.
