Iceberg at Gerlache Strait

Hoje (incluindo a madrugada de ontem pra hoje), continuamos a ocupar as estações oceanográficas, além de seguirmos um transecto ao longo do estreito de Gerlache, com o objetivo de observar as baleias na região (Projetos INTERBIOTA e BALEIAS). Sim, há muitas baleias jubarte nadando por aqui!

O estreito de Gerlache é um capítulo à parte, de tão lindo! Montanhas e geleiras enormes dos dois lados, gelo na água fazendo o mar parecer prateado. E hoje, no final do dia, atingimos o ponto mais ao sul da derrota deste cruzeiro oceanográfico, 65°S.

Today (including the early morning), we've carried on at the stations our CTD-O2 Fluorescence vertical profiling, water sampling for carbon (alkalinity, pH, DOC, POC), nutrients, pigments, phytoplankton and bacteria biomass. additionally, the BALEIAS project group has followed a transect along the Gerlache Strait. There are quite a lot of humpback whales around.

Gerlache Strait is awesome! High mountains, glaciers on both sides, ice floating on the water, it was looking silvery everywhere. and today we've also reached our southernmost point for the cruise: 65°S.

NAUTILUS, o início!

Hoje à tarde começamos a primeira estação oceanográfica do projeto NAUTILUS, que tem vários pontos em comum com o projeto INTERBIOTA. Muita expectativa, mas deu tudo certo! No meu turno, ainda havia luz quando ocupamos a segunda estação, em frente à Ilha Deception - um antigo vulcão, do qual hoje sobram as paredes da cratera, formando uma baía no interior da ilha. Impressionante!
Das vigias do Tio Max, muitas baleias jubarte, leões marinhos e pinguins nadando por aqui - pena que as minhas habilidades como fotógrafa ainda ajudem muito a fotografar estes animais. E mais um iceberg! Amanha temos mais...

This afternoon we have occupied the first oceanographic station common to NAUTILUS and INTERBIOTA projects, and everything went fine. During my work shift, there was still enough light to see (but not to photograph...) Deception Island. Our second station is located in front of the island, that actually is an old volcano. The craters form a closed bay, giving it a truly funny horseshoe shape.

When one stares at the sea around here, there are always humpback whales, penguins, albatrosses, and so on. Unfortunately my photograph skills are not good enough to capture them, so I just enjoy the view. We passed by another iceberg today! More tomorrow...

Terra à vista! Avistamos a Ilha do Rei George (que faz parte do arquipélago das Ilhas Shetland do Sul) pela manhã, onde fica a EACF.
Hoje comemoramos o aniversário do Chefe de Operações do Tio Max, parabéns Gizo!
À tarde, vários colegas desembarcaram, e começamos a faina de arrumar o laboratório misto e o convés do CTD para os trabalhos dos projetos NAUTILUS e INTERBIOTA. Ficou tudo pronto para amanhã! E o navio também ficou bem vazio.

Ah, e hoje vi o primeiro iceberg da minha vida. Nem sei se é grande, pequeno, feio ou bonito. Acho que nao me esqueco mais.

Land! We saw the King George Island (one of the South Shetland Islands), where the Brazilian Antarctic Station (EACF) is located.
Today we also celebrated Gizo's birthday, Uncle Max's Operations Chief. Happy birthday!
In the afternoon, many colleagues left the ship to the station on land, and we've finished preparing the lab and the CTD deck. Everything is ready for tomorrow!

Last, but not the least, I've seen the first iceberg in my life. Not sure whether it is a small or big, pretty or ugly one. But I'll never forget it.

Paralelo 60°S = Oceano Austral

Agora faltam o Oceano Índico e o Ártico pra completar o álbum.
Hoje à tarde cruzamos o paralelo 60°S, que "marca" o limite norte do Oceano Austral. Estamos oficialmente na Antártica!
No laboratório, mexemos ainda em algumas coisas, mas devemos ainda esperar amanhã para que todos desembarquem na EACF. Sem muitas novidades a bordo.
PS: Drake tranquilo. É MUITA ÁGUA! E é lindo!

Now there are missing the Indian and the Arctic Oceans to tick in my map. This afternoon we crossed the 60°S parallel, which is the northern border of the Southern Ocean. We are officially in Antarctica!
In the lab we have arranged a couple of small things, but we really need to wait for tomorrow, when the colleagues that will stay on land will leave the ship.
PS: Calm Drake Passage. So much water, amazing and beautiful!

Saímos dos canais chilenos e amanheceu um dia lindo, o céu parecia competir com o mar pra ver quem era o mais azul. O mar está calmo, bom pra navegar (o navio também é muito bom), e só de vez em quando vem uma ou outra onda meio de través, mas faz parte. Navegar é preciso, ainda mais pra chegar na Península Antártica. Hoje consolidamos o plano amostral, tiramos grande parte do material de laboratório e trabalho que estava no porão, e amanhã começará a faina de montar tudo. A previsão de chegada na Estação Antártica Comandante Ferraz (EACF) é sexta-feira, onde muitos colegas a bordo vão desembarcar. Sábado começa a Oceanografia, uhu!
Bucaneira é um apelido antigo... Drake, dependendo do ponto de vista histórico (principalmente se for do ponto de vista espanhol), também recebeu a mesma alcunha...

Left the Chilean waters, and we day today is simply gorgeous. Sky and sea competing to get the "bluest" shade of blue ever. Sea is calm (and ship is great), just every now and then a wave on the side to shake a little bit. Navegar é preciso (check Fernando Pessoa and you'll understand). Today we finished the station plan, took almost all of our material from the deposit, and tomorrow we'll start preparing the lab. On Friday we should reach Estacao Antártica Comandante Ferraz, where quite a few colleagues will leave the ship. Saturday we'll eventually start doing Oceanography!!! Yes!!
Buccaneer is an old nickname... Drake and his mates, depending on the historical point of view, too...

Hoje é o sexto aniversário da incorporacao do Tio Max à Marinha do Brasil! Tivemos cerimônia e comemoracoes a bordo, parabéns!!
A navegação através dos canais chilenos foi tranquila, e o visual é deslumbrante. O céu nublado poderia ter sido mais camarada, mas NADA apaga a cor azul fantástica das geleiras. O por do sol nos brindou com um pouquinho mais de cores no céu, e à noite, quando navegávamos em frente à cidade de Ushuaia, na Argentina, fomos brindados com uma lua cheia que prateou todo o navio. Amanhã começaremos a travessia da Passagem de Drake. Fotos a seguir, quando possível...

Six years ago, Uncle Max joined the Brazilian Navy. We had a celebration on board, happy birthday!
The Magellan Strait has gorgeous landscapes! The cloudy skies could not dim the unbelievable blue colour from the glaciers. We had a bit of sun late in the afternoon, and when we were passing in front of Ushuaia, Argentina, a bright silver full moon came out. Beautiful! Tomorrow we'll start sailing through the Drake Passage. Pictures later, please be patient :)

Expectativa para largar. Às 13:00h, todos a bordo, e assim deixamos Punta Arenas no final da tarde. Previsão de mar calmo na derrota, inclusive no Drake. Aproveitamos para dividir as equipes dos projetos NAUTILUS e INTERBIOTA - quem trabalha no turno da manhã, quem fica à noite, controle de convés, operação de CTD, filtração, coleta de água, e por aí vai. Quando terminar a travessia, vamos arrumar o laboratório.
Punta Arenas é muito simpática! Já passei a mão no pé do índio :) , e joguei umas margaridinhas no mar, just in case.
Fico devendo fotos. Assim que puder, eu farei uma atualizacao nos posts pra incluir as fotos. Até!

Great expectations, all on board today at 13:00, in order to leave Punta Arenas by the end of the afternoon. Weather forecast is good, and that includes also the Drake Passage (ouff!). We (NAUTILUS and INTERBIOTA projects) have divided the team into day and night shifts, who's going to operate the CTD, control the activities on deck, filter, collects the water samples and so on.
Punta Arenas is a nice place. I've scrubbed the indian statue's foot, just in case.
