Algumas palavras antes de partir... Before leaving, a few words...

Mares do Sul blog is a way I’ve found to share with you my experiences and impressions during my first scientific cruise to the Southern Ocean.

I’ll try and post, in a not very linear timeline (sorry!), the story behind it, explain the scientific project I’m part of, and as often as possible, keep a diary of what is happening on board the polar research vessel Almte. Maximiano (H41, Brazilian Navy) aka “Uncle Max”.

The idea of keeping a blog about marine sciences has been developing since quite some time now, mostly inspired by my colleague Mirjam Glessmer (http://mirjamglessmer.com/), and her excellent blog  Adventures in Oceanography and Teaching.  Besides, I’ll be able somehow to keep in touch with family and friends during my summer down in the Screaming Sixties (more about it on a future post – briefly, the parallel 60°S is generally considered as the northern boundary of the Southern Ocean), while enjoying the fantastic landscape, and of course working hard on board Uncle Max. Hope you enjoy reading it. Comments, criticisms, suggestions are always welcome!
